What is the first thing you do when the closing credits pop up on screen? For a start, I wipe my tears after watching a comedy - and I am not alone. Yes, Jack Neo’s film is famous for its social satire yet this time deep sentiment is embedded in it. Tears will soon be followed by strings of laughter as you watch this film.
I Not Stupid Too continues the ups and downs of the Singaporean boys. Tom (Shawn Lee) is a champion in blogging yet that talent is not valued by his parents (Jack Neo and Xiang Yun). For him, home is just an empty shell to stay overnight, though it seems everything is available.
As for his younger brother, Jerry (Ashley Leong), he is reaching puberty and with that comes curiosity as well. Misunderstandings lead him to believe that he has made his classmate pregnant. As his parents are forever busy working, the only source he has is the idiot box. He believes that false images are censored and if it is screened on television that means it must be true.
This film is indeed a warning sign to the society. What has gone wrong nowadays that parents have to give up their parenthood to the maids and TV sets? Why do we invent advanced electronic gadgets to improve communication when the only message our kids get while trying to reach parents is “The user is not available, please dial later”? Why do we find it so easy to scold and cane but hard to praise and say I love you, just like Cheng Cai’s (Joshua Ang) dad?
Perhaps, that was how parents were educated. They love us but they have no idea how to show it. However, just like what Tom’s grandma says, “Times have changed; you have to speak the language that your kids understand”. Generation gap should indeed be filled up with understanding, appreciation and respect. Love alone is not enough.
For youths out there, bring your family to the cinema. This is the best chance to share a film that would make you laugh and cry. As for parents, it is a compliment if your kids invite you as that shows they are still hoping you will be involved in their life, even if it is just watching a simple film with an ungrammatical title, like I Not Stupid Too.
